marketing your website

We have included here some information on various aspects of marketing your website. Simply click on each tab to find out more.

Optimisation...

Optimisation of a web site is all about increasing the 'relevancy' of the content of a website to particular search terms and entails making the site responsive to the requirements of each individual search engine.

Examples are:

the inclusion of 'key words' in the meta tag section of each page - meta tags are not seen when a visitor views your page but one of their uses is to guide search engine as to the content of the page.

ensuring all images have 'alt text' - to see this in action pass your mouse over the image on this page and you will see a description of the image. Alt text is important because search engines do not 'see' images but do examine the alt text description.

Making sure that the actual content (ie the text on each page) includes as many keywords as possible for example villa, swimming pool, Bordeaux, etc etc - this is known as keyword density.

Submission to search engines...

In theory, because search engines continually 'trawl' the internet they should in time find your site and if accepted will include it in their index of sites. It is advisable however to register your site with at least the key search engines as this should speed up the process. Many web design companies use automated registration programmes but these can be counterproductive as many search engines eg Google reject automated submissions. For this reason we always manually submit sites.

It is worth bearing in mind that Yahoo!, which is very popular, is a directory and not a search engine - this means a slightly different approach when submitting your site.

'dmoz' is not particularly well known but is a central database of websites that is used by many search engines, particularly smaller ones. Registration with dmoz is a little tricky but essential.

Site links...

Several search engines rank a site by its 'popularity' as measured by links to it from other sites. And the more popular the site that is originating the link the more 'valuable' the link is. For this reason it is worth trying to get other sites to link to your site eg local tourist offices, golf clubs etc etc. Signing up with directories can also be worthwhile but if these are just lists of sites then they probably have little value.

Pay per Click...

Most of the major search engines and directories operate a system of paid for listings. These usually appear at the top of the search results page and/or in the right hand column. You only pay when someone clicks on the link and is directed to your site - hence the term 'pay per click'

It can be a radical, efficient form of advertising and arguably has changed the way many businesses market themselves. It means you can control when and how your site appears in search results but, given the cost, it is important to carefully manage the campaign. PPC is probably best viewed as a supplement to getting a good ranking in search engines.

As part of our web design and marketing package we provide a managed campaign for your site using Google AdWords.

Marketing tips...

We have collected together a selection of marketing ideas to provide 'food for thought' for promoting the rental of your holiday home. Some are internet based and some more traditional.

  • Postcards

Send friends and contacts postcards from the area where your house is and tell them about your new website.

  • Business cards

Have you ever got into to conversation with someone about your holiday home? They say it sounds interesting and you scribble down your telephone number. Much better would be to give them a printed card with your contact details and website address. You could also give a few cards to friends to pass on to their friends.

  • Update your website

Keeping your website up to date makes it more interesting to visitors and they feel more confident that the information is reliable and not several years out of date. It also helps with search engine rankings. You could use our Content Editor is change a 'News' section to tell people about local events.

  • Rental rates

The Content Editor can also be used to make changes to the rental rates advertised on your site. Perhaps offering a special rate if you have a void period in the next week or two?

  • Don't get framed

Avoid having a website that uses 'frames'. This is an old technology which most web designers agree produces under-performing websites in terms of accessibility and search engine rankings. It is easy to check if a site uses frames - in Internet Explorer just click on View and then Source and you will see the coding for the site. Look out in the first 10 lines for words like frameset and frame. Needless to say we do not use frames!

  • Activity holidays

These days more and more people are looking for holidays that involve an activity or hobby. Walking, horse-riding, fishing golf to name just a few. Why not try and use your local knowledge to put together an activity package. This could be something like a series of local walks with detailed maps, places to stop for lunch etc. These can all be added to your website and promoted via search engines. A good way to extend the letting season beyond July and August.

  • Email newsletter

Send occasional email newsletters about your holiday home to friends, contacts and previous renters and invite them to forward the email on. If you send 100 emails and on average each person forwards just two emails that's 200 new contacts!

  • Freebies?

You could build up your email list and keep in contact with people by offering to send them something like a free list of local events or a guide to places to visit etc.
